It is easy to be lazy when designing Vinyl Banners by Rick Hendershot, for Vinyl Banners Canada One of the problems with using an image on your vinyl banner or billboard design is that you may end up expecting the photo to do TOO much, and think the rest of the elements are unimportant. You may just assume your vinyl banner does not need an interesting headline. Or you may be tempted to not bother giving your special offer some graphic appeal. But when designing display graphics, popup displays and vinyl banners, being creative with your headline and layout can make a graphically striking promotional piece even more effective. Thinking Creatively takes some effort Often when designing an advertising message or vinyl banner design it is easy to get lazy. Unless you are careful you may be prepared to settle for the ordinary and uninspired rather than taking a few minutes to try coming up with something creative. For instance, I am usually tempted to accept a simple description of the product being promoted on the vinyl banner rather than an imaginative statement of what it can do for me, what problem it can solve, or how much money I am going to save if I buy it. I settle for a headline like "Full Color Vinyl Banners" because it seems obvious and is the easy thing to do. But it is almost always better to scratch my head a bit and try to come up with a more interesting headline. Think about the origin of such famous slogans as "An apple a day keeps the doctor away" or "I love New York". Not everybody has gems like this waiting to leap out, but most of us can come up with things like: It's been a banner day
I think it is safe to say that, in advertising at least, creativity is almost always better than the lack of it. Of course, this is difficult to prove. And even worse, many people claim they have no creativity in them, so they think this excuses them from trying a little harder to come up with an interesting headline. But in advertising it really comes down to this: "Do you want your ad, your poster, your billboard, or your vinyl banner to be effective or not?" And now that we have that settled, put your creative hat on and start using your imagination. Rick Hendershot has been involved in promotion and advertising for many years.
