It works by delivering an elevated dose of birth control hormones that prevents an egg from implanting in the womb. Under the proposed legislation, pharmacists would have also been able to opt out of filling such prescriptions. But opponents saw this as blatant discrimination against women, arguing that such an opt-out provision does not apply to any other prescription drugs. Opponents see the drug as a type of abortion, and argued that parents should be involved in such decisions as they affect their children. Similar bills have failed to pass in other jurisdictions.
